In recent years, the number of people seeking treatment for pornography addiction at facilities like Desert Solace has sharply risen. Technology provides one reason for this uptick in pornography addiction: the easy accessibility of pornography on internet-connected electronic devices means that nearly anyone can access pornography instantly.

On a recent interview, Desert Solace co-founder and Family Liaison Jerri Jorgensen said that one of the reasons more people are becoming addicted to pornography is because of its easy accessibility on technology like phones, tablets and computers.

“With the iPads and the phones and we’re just giving our kids a loaded gun,” Jorgensen said. She further argued that while previous generations mostly relied on magazines for pornographic content, “what’s on the internet now, and on our mobile devices … is way beyond that.”

Moreover, this ease of access means that children are finding pornography at younger ages than ever before. Jorgensen explained that “first exposure (to pornography) usually is around 5 or 6 years old.”

Because teenagers rely on smartphones to keep in touch with their peers and adults rely on both cell phones and computers for work purposes, pornography is constantly just a tap or a click away. This reliance on phones and computers, combined with the amount of pornography available over this technology, makes recovery from pornography addiction especially difficult.

With pornography addiction, Jorgensen said, “you may not have a dealer, but yeah, your dealer’s your phone.”

This means that in order to get away from the source of pornography, those seeking recover may need to disconnect from the same technology that usually keeps them connected to their peers and coworkers, and may mean stepping away from their job for a time.

Inpatient facilities like Desert Solace have structured rules around technology use for this reason. At Desert Solace, Jorgensen explained, electronics are mostly not allowed.

“Clear the brain out, learn — and then the last couple weeks that they’re in treatment, we give them back their phone, so that they can have it with support,” Jorgensen said. “Because we don’t just want to throw it at them in the end, so everything we do has a big purpose.”

Ultimately, Jorgensen urged those seeking treatment for pornography addiction to reach out for help and resources.

“If you call and you’re not even thinking about residential treatment,” Jorgensen said, “we’re still really good resources. Because we’ve both been there. We’ve lived it.”
