Desert Solace co-founder Jerri Jorgensen explains how the residential addiction treatment center helps clients and their loved ones set boundaries to support recovery.

During Desert Solace’s addiction treatment program, clients learn to acknowledge their negative emotions and find ways to cope with them without using addictive substances and behaviors. They also learn how to communicate with others in a productive way, which includes setting boundaries.

Jorgensen explained that boundaries “are critical, and boundaries aren’t punishment — they are for our safety.”

When setting boundaries, loved ones communicate what they need to be happy and healthy in a relationship with the person struggling with addiction. Furthermore, those who struggle with addiction can set positive boundaries to help them move forward in the addiction treatment process.

For example, someone who struggles with addiction to alcohol could set a boundary that they no longer want to keep alcohol in their house or attend parties where there’s likely to be a lot of alcohol consumed.

Boundaries also allow people to deepen their bonds with the people in their lives. Oftentimes, people have unspoken expectations of one another, but those expectations might not be the same on both sides of a relationship. By making expectations clear, there’s less room for misunderstandings and perceived betrayal.

Jorgensen described the attitude behind boundaries as one in which the aim is to support one another through communication. “‘I want this to work, so I’m willing to take a journey, but I’m willing to look at myself and my own self-limiting beliefs and get the help that I need,'” said Jorgensen, as an example of the spirit in which boundaries should be set.

Ultimately, Jorgensen said that it’s important for Desert Solace attendees and their loved ones to come to realize that “you can’t control anyone and they get to learn that.”

“We don’t look at things as right, wrong, good, or bad. Is it working for you?” Jorgensen asked. “Sometimes we just get this tunnel vision that we think it has to look a certain way,” she continued. “Our lives don’t have to look any certain way.”

By working with clients and their loved ones, Desert Solace staff aim to pave a path to a solid recovery. Ultimately, Jorgensen aims to teach both clients and their loved ones to communicate better and stay open to the addiction treatment process.
