Addiction inpatient facility Desert Solace offers each client’s family support throughout the recovery process, even after treatment ends.

People who are addicted to substances or behavior may rationalize their condition, thinking that they’re only harming themselves. They may try to keep their addiction to themselves because they fear “letting down” their family members. But the reality of the situation is that addiction affects entire households.

Desert Solace Inpatient Treatment Center in St. George, UT focuses primarily on pornography addiction recovery and sex addiction recovery through our pornography and sex addiction treatment programs, but Desert Solace also offers services for other forms of addiction as well.

“(Addiction) is a shame driven disease,” said Desert Solace Co-founder and Family Liaison Jerri Jorgensen. “A lot more than (addiction to) drugs and alcohol (are).”

That shame can make it difficult to reach out to professionals for help. Furthermore, it can make it difficult to even talk about with loved ones. Because those suffering from addiction are often afraid to come forward and ask for help, they can feel like they’re all alone in the world, even when they’re surrounded by people who love them.

Family members of people who suffer from addiction are also likely to feel alone. This is because they often don’t know or understand what their loved one is going through, but can tell that he or she is pulling away. Often there’s a sense of lost connections and emotional withholding in families where addiction exists.

Because family dynamics are often strained when one or more family members suffer from addiction, Desert Solace emphasizes offering the whole family support while their clients seek recovery.

For those suffering from addiction, “coming out of that shame and stepping through it takes a lot of courage. But the courage is there; sometimes we just don’t tap into it,” said Desert Solace co-founder Jerri Jorgensen.

“It (also) takes wives’ courage to say, ‘Okay, I’m willing to — to give this another shot. Because I do want to save our family,’” Jorgensen continued.

While Desert Solace clients undergo inpatient treatment at their facility in St. George, Utah, Jorgensen offers family support to wives and other loved ones over weekly phone calls.

“(Wives of our clients) are going to get on my weekly calls. I’m going to coach (them),” Jorgensen explained. “We’re going to do wives’ retreats … just connect like crazy. And so I’m teaching them a lot of the Desert Solace principles that their spouses are learning. Or their sons.“

Among these principles, Jorgensen is especially quick to recommend family members of addicts learn about boundaries. Boundaries should prioritize the safety of everyone in the home, and should not be motivated by a desire to control or punish the other person.

“You should tell them, ‘I’m setting this boundary because I’m still invested in our relationship. I still want to be married to you,’” Jorgensen advised. “‘I want this to work, so I’m willing to take a journey, but I’m willing to look at myself and my own self-limiting beliefs and get the help that I need,’” she further explained.
